David Dahlenburg is a 5 th generation South Australian that has a deep connection with the landscape that surrounds him. He grew up in the small farming town of Napperby. His early years were filled with the natural wonder of the southern Flinders Ranges that could be seen outside his back door.

David’s parents were part of a local land care group. Many family outings were spent driving and walking through regional and outback South Australia. This is where the seeds of exploration were sown. David’s love for the ancient South Australian Landscape was born.

David’s fascination with aerial photography was first sparked as a child. In his grandparents’ house hung an aerial photograph of the family farm. The scene outside the window looked nothing like the like the photograph on the wall. The elevated vantage point provided an entire new perspective to his familiar surroundings. The first time David arranged to fly over the tidal creeks of Spencer Gulf he made a detour to fly over the farm. He was instantly transported back to his childhood self, gazing at the photograph on the wall.

David’s photography is by and large remarkable. The surprising allure of industrialised landscapes and the beauty of the natural world are captured in his aerial work.

From the sky, the land is transformed with little reference point from everyday reality. David combines light, form and colour to create abstract and mysterious works of art that invite quiet contemplation. This is one of the cornerstones of great photography.

The exploration of remote, seldom seen landscapes continues to inspire David’s art and his sense of adventure.

We’re not just documenting the outback, we’re telling a story… We’re creating art that is intriguing and mysterious...

Tim Wrate is an Australian landscape photographer with an affinity for exploring and capturing the wild and rugged Great Southern Land with a special emphasis on aerial exploration. Tim has an insatiable drive, in the deepest sense, to capture the beauty, the honesty and the unique character of the Australian landscape from the aerial perspective.

As a child Tim’s imagination run wild drawing fantastical landscape vistas of looming mountain ranges fringed by dark forests and framed by running rivers. Tim’s photography is merely an adult incarnation of a childhood obsession.

In January 2018, during a family holiday in Western Australia, Tim gave himself the opportunity to charter a flight over Hutt Lagoon, a stunning salt lake well known for its array of pinks, magentas and reds. The minute the texture and colour of the lake was unveiled below him, he was immediately hooked. Even now, he recalls the exhilarating feeling of take-off - a mixture of acceleration and weightlessness all at once. A feeling that transported him to his early childhood memories flying in his grandfather’s Cessna 175, a four-seater light aircraft, that he flew from his farm in Queensland’s Western Downs Region. The buzz of the propeller, the vibration of the chassis and the bumpy rural runway were all part of the thrill.

For Tim, the sense of freedom of being in the air scanning the landscape for shapes, textures and forms is all-consuming. He feels that aerial photography provides him with a unique perspective to explore his passion for photography, as what may seem ordinary from the ground can be extraordinary from above.

I really hope that our portfolio can speak to the spirit and the power of this country
